If you are one of those that thought that last year was over more
quickly, you'd be right. Scientists say our planet spun faster than
normal last year, fastest on record since 1960. Even the Earth wanted
2020 to be over in a hurry.
But if you did detect this, you would be quite sensitive. In 2020 the
Earth completed its annul revolution just milliseconds quicker than average.
The Earth's rotation can change slightly because of the movement of its
core, weather and ocean patterns, atmospheric changes - specifically
atmospheric pressures around the world, and wind patterns like El Niño.
So is this significant? Turns out it is. The GPS system is based on
very accurate time keeping and when that time changes this throws off
the precision of the GPS indication.
Next time you get lost, you can now blame the GPS because 2020 was over
faster and screwed up the clock.
