Steve, I too was most impressed with Oki and her 'smarts' and desire to better
herself. How sad that our young people nowadays are handed an education and
some don't take advantage of the opportunity. Our own kids had 'chores' to do
growing up but not sure our grandkids know what work is all about.
Ok--enough--I will get off my soapbox now.
Our retired teachers visited and toured our local tech college. Oh, my--they
just built a big health addition. I sure don't remember all the lounge areas
--comfy with fireplaces and soft lighting. Great study and gathering places,
nicer than my home. But my point is that our state gives a free ride to
students who apply to six target areas of need like welding, nursing,
med-fire-PT/OT assistant and a few others. Seniors don't even apply!! Too
much work to fill out the paperwork. Oh, my. It is so easy to complete
scholarship applications now with computers.
Again--have a great day--we are hoping it warms up and the girls keep their
legs crossed until it is warmer. NO fun having a calf born when the temp is
below zero. That's why I collect old towels from friends. Anyone want to
watch our cows--let me know--mostly right now on the cameras you see our cats
just running all over to keep warm!!
Pam

Subject: [fhs-65] Oki and her school experience
So very interesting, Steve. It is no surprise to me that Oki is smart! She
married you, right?!
Her school experience reminds me of my mom's, who grew up on a small dairy farm
in Wisconsin, the youngest of 7 kids. The local school, in Boaz, ended with
sophomore year. Her oldest brother had gone to Richland Center to finish high
school, and convinced their parents that she should too. So it was arranged
that she would live with an older couple there and work for her room and board.
She was 14. Her mother drove her there in a horse and buggy, as they didn't
have a car. This was in 1927.
