Subject: Cycling opportunity
Hi Mary,
As we discussed yesterday, we have started a Cycle group based out of The Ierne
Social and Sports club in Drumcondra. It's a joint development with Dublin City
Council (DCC) who are the main sponsors of the group.
We meet on a Monday morning at the East Wall Boat Club, which is located off
the entrance road into the East Point Business Centre. Our cycles start at
10.00AM.
The group is made up of men and women all aged over 55 with a common interest
in staying fit and good socialization. Depending on the fitness of the
individuals we can cycle from 10Km up to 50Km of a morning. We try to stay on
cycle ways or greenways, an example being along the Canal paths. Once the
cyclist has gained enough confidence and can demonstrate an ability to cycle in
groups, then we venture out on roads. We can also provide bikes, high Vis
jackets and helmets for those that want to try cycling before investing in a
bike of their own.
The other advantage of our location is that we have the Dublin City to Howth
Cycle path going by our front door. And the Royal Canal path is also close by.
We have recently acquired a number of tandems. These open up opportunities to
provide cycling to people who may not be able to cycle singly but do have the
physical ability to do so. People with vision disabilities would be an example
of the people I have in mind.
If you know of any one from your contacts in the visually impaired community
that may like to use this facility, perhaps you could arrange for us to meet up
with them and see how this could come together.
I have CC our local DCC Sports Officer, Derek Ahern on this email.
Great talking again, and perhaps we might see you in Lycra soon. LOL
Des
