Hi Gerry
As Gerry said the dat file is created by Microsoft Outlook. I had that when
I was working in the Department. The dat.file is just an additional file
that Outlook usees to enhance the fonts and format used in the email for
other Outlook users. When Gmail reads this file it is seen as an additional
technical file the annoying dat.file. It is important for the person
sending emails using Outlook to change the option from the default RTF
(Rich Text Format) to Basic TexL Then there is no dat.file sent out.
Otherwise ignore it when you get it in Gmail. Good notes on the meeting by

Thank you Cearbhall for your minutes and to the members of the club for all
their interesting meetings I had the same problem as Mary with email
attachments coming as DAT files rather than Word and PDF. I downloaded some
conversion apps on the iPhone but none worked properly. The root of the
problem seemed to be that Fighting Blindness (in this particular case they
were the organisation sending me the files) used Microsoft outlook for
their emails. I do not know much about this stuff as members of the club
but
it seemed there was encryption at work when sent to an iPhone. If they sent
the emails and attachments by way of a Gmail account no problems ensued.
Another workaround was with the company sending you emails and attachments
creating an email account for you such as Marylavelle@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
.

Mary Lavelle demonstrated her Apple Bluetooth Airpods purchased for a
vastly reduced cost in Tenerife making us all jealous.
Cearbhall introduced his new Bowes Bluetooth earbuds and reported some
difficulties in getting used to the new equipment. He noted that
Bluetooth 5 was the best version of Bluetooth to buy as this was the
most compatible with the latest smart phones.
Bob demonstrated a device called a "Stopper which attaches to the back
of any phone and expands to allow the fingers of one hand to hold the
phone for selfies and showed how it collapses to half its height when not
to use.
Mary reported that she received an email from a winmail source with
attachments that should have been six word and pdf documents for a
meeting but were delivered as .dat files. A discussion ensued as to
what .dat files were and it was agreed to follow up and report to the
list later with any solution that might be found.
Mary raised a query on the Audible app in which the app seems to
permanently select the Cloud as the book source rather than the
device. Mary disconnected from the internet to show that the book was
being read in the device and not from the cloud but the app still
selects the Cloud option rather than the Device. Again, this was not
resolved and we undertook to investigate further and report.
Damien asked for advice on the best choice of apps for use in the
iPhone and for accessing legal documents. He also asked whether JAWS
or NVDA was the better choice for use on the laptop. The meeting felt
that he should start with NVDA as this was free and an excellent program
