Declan was unable to stay for the meeting and passed the host control to Ken.
Jackie wondered how to find out if a windows update was due. She was advised
to open the start menu and type "Winver" to see what version of Windows is on
her computer, then type "update" in the start menu. This opens "Check for
Update" in System settings.
Ken reported a successful encounter with the Be-My-Eyes team who helped him
to sort out a Windows Live Mail password problem on his laptop. He was unable
to get windows Live Mail to accept his password. He called Be-My-Eyes
specialist help selecting the Microsoft section. The helpful assistant took
over his laptop remotely and fixed the problem in 5 minutes. Several other
participants agreed that this app is very successful and particularly because
it makes sighted assistance readily available.
Martha also had a productive experience in which the Apple specialist in Be
My Eyes sorted out her iPhone. They sent a text message and guided her to
take corrective action. Unlike the Microsoft approach, the Apple team Don't
have direct control of the iPhone but can observe the screen and so guide the
operation.
Jackie used Be My Eyes to help with visual information in the space around
her.
Bert undertook to circulate a freephone number to FB-Exchange for Apple Care
and accessibility.
Noreen was having difficulty joining the zoom meeting and found that she had
two sessions of Zoom open at the same time. This prevented her own voice from
being heard at the meeting and was resolved by closing one of the sessions.
Bert suggested that she use the space bar as a walkie-talkie speech key by
holding it down while speaking after muting her audio. Bert uses this with
great success but Noreen found it virtually impossible to silence JAWS which
issues a hissing sound as it repeatedly tries to say "Space" while the key is
pressed.
Bert advised that she press JAWS+s to toggle the speech output to "Off" but
this was also unsuccessful.
Pat McCarthy pointed out that the Mute switch on the iPhone can indicate
whether the phone is switched on or not. When the phone is active, this key
gives a brief vibration.
Pat Walsh looked for advice on a suitable word processor to use on his
iPhone. Cearbhall and Ken advised him to try the Pages ap which is installed
as part of IOS and is the equivalent of Microsoft Word on the PC.
Cearbhall wanted to know how to get started with the Blind Square navigation
app. Bert and Jackie recommended setting the app to "Look around" mode. Then
set Google as the map base for blind Square to use. Next, move along a chosen
route and record points of interest. Blind Square will, then, guide the user
by navigating along the POIs. Bert explained that Google maps is particularly
useful in planning mode. He offered to circulate a set of podcasts
introducing the app and simulating real usage.
Martha sought advice on the best licence to buy for the use of Microsoft Word
on her laptop. After some discussion it was agreed that she should seek a
once off licence from Amazon.
Derry remarked that he has an Old PC running Windows 7 and wondered whether
he should learn how to work in windows or the iPhone. He was advised to
concentrate on the iPhone as he is most familiar with that. He prefers to use
voice input and a discussion followed on the best way to manage Dictate to
edit lengthy text documents. Various suggestions were offered together with
an explanation of the edit and selection options available on the Rotor in
IOS.
Cearbhall reported great difficulty using the onboard keypad in IOS when
phoning a bank in which the keypad was difficult to locate accurately enough
for speedy entry of required numbers. It was pointed out that the number pad
moves on the screen for safety, preventing a sighted observer from easily
recognising the numbers entered.
Pat recommended that Derry use the iPod Touch since it gave the same
functionality of IOS without the phone.
Ken noticed that after upgrading to IOS 13.4.1. the system tells him that he
is using more battery than in the previous update with a warning that the
battery might not last so well.
Ken noticed that his Audible app frequently opens an audio book at a
different place from that which he left previously.
He turned off data and WIFI. To ensure that the book is actually on his own
device. Still, the behaviour continues. A lengthy discussion ensued without a
clear conclusion. ken was advised to log the exact nature of each event that
occurs in order to bring a case to Audible for a possible solution.
Chris started a discussion on the use of family share with the Dream Reader
app. It was agreed that this can be done.
