Stuart described blind bowling.. Here the player throws a marker ball, known
as the "Jack", as far as possible on the fairway. The 'Director', who stands
beyond the 'jack', indicates to the player at what angle and distance the
bowl has rested from the 'jack'. The player gains points by landing the
bowling ball as near as possible to the Jack.
The Apple Watch featured strongly in today's session.
Joe wanted to know if navigation apps could be loaded into the Apple Watch.
Bert advised him to check to see if any navigation app is listed as
available under the Watch setting in IOS. If a suitable app is available, it
can be loaded into the watch directly from this list.
Eamonn sought advice on the choice of typing mode. to use on the Apple Watch.
He would like to use touch typing but Bert advised that the best choice would
be Direct Typing because the interface is too small to make touch typing
accurate.
In the course of experimenting with his Apple Watch, Joe found that when
Voiceover was activated on the Watch, there was no sound from the iPhone.

Apple Watch 101: A Live Demonstration Of Getting Walking Directions From The
Watch And Apple Maps

In this episode of his series of podcasts looking at the Apple Watch, David
Woodbridge asks us to join him for a walk as he uses Apple Maps on the Watch
to receive walking directions.
The new navigation app, VoiceVista, is now available in the app store. Some
members have downloaded the app and found that the interface is looking good.
They will walk with the app and report.
Another app, built on Soundscape, is in beta testing and is called "Open
Scape". It is possible to subscribe to become a tester.
On public transport apps, Moovit is found to be very good at focussing on a
particular bus number and reporting on its arrival time. This is particularly
useful when the same bus stop has to cater for a number of different busses.
The new TFI app is proving to be too clunky with Voiceover. It is hard to
find where the "due now" announcemnt is located.
All agreed that the Dublin Bus app was brilliant and that the "next bus"
works very well.
John finds that the TFI Live app is manageable by those with some sight. He
recommended saving the required bus number as a favourite before searching
for the arrival times. The resulting screen is much clearer and less
cluttered.
A live demonstration showed that Voiceover does not follow the details of the
TFI screen.
The topic of settlement and other cracks appearing in the home led Cearbhall
to suggest using glass tell-tales to monitor new masonry cracks. These
consist of a small piece of glass securely glued across the existing crack
with an epoxy glue. If there is the slightest movement in the masonry, the
glass will crack long before visual evidence of an active crack appears in
the masonry.
Annette is planning a major safari into the middle of Ireland and wondered
whether to use Apple Maps or Google Maps. Most experienced voiceover users
found Google Maps to be best. To find the address of the premises that she
intends to visit, it was suggested that she get hold of the Eircode of the
destination as this will provide all the information that Google needs.
John has been exploring the Sunu navigation app. It uses a band like a watch
that vibrates on proximity to different objects such as bins or poles.
It takes a good deal of practice to accurately interpret the warning
vibrations. The bank is worn on the wrist of the free hand while the white
stick or guide dog is used in the other hand. The band cannot be used on its

The popular Voice dream reader has recently been bought by amazon but its
founder, Winston Chang has kept the writer and scanner apps under his
control.
Eamonn noted that the original purpose of Voice dream reader was to assist
people with dyslexia. After its creation, It became obvious that the app
would benefit blind users.
VizLens is an iOS app that assists visually impaired people to access
everyday appliances, such as microwaves, washing machines, and more. Read
