Good morning, everyone today on this sunny morning, sunny in Sligo anyway I
have no idea if it is lashing in whatever part of the country, you are
reading these notes in. I will be your note taker today so boil the kettle
and make some tea, coffee, or whatever drink you prefer and settle in for a
read.
The meeting started early with quite a lot of people showing up at 10.45. it
started off with discussion of cearbhalls clothes for some reason. Martha
asked about any scandal from Jackie. She mentioned that NCBI were on joe
Duffy during the week. She was muffled during this due to the headphones she
was using. Discussion of their previous add campaigns commenced for a while.
Dominique said that the website for NCBI had been updated last year. It was
fully revamped. She said that it was quite accessible, but she has noted some
grammatical errors. She also brought up a new IOS book she recently read for
learning the basics of navigating an iPhone. she wants to learn how to keep
JAWS on the same spot where she left off in her book or how to use
bookmarks. ken suggested putting markers to use control f with for example a
plus symbol at the top of chapters. Cearbhall said that pressing enter in the
find menu will bring you to the spot. Dominique said that the book is in a
quite easy form
at to read. She went over the history of the book. This is the second
version of the book this author has written, and it has taken him two years
to complete. She said that she will miss it when it is done but cannot wait
for it to be finished. Dominiqueinique said she was dreaming of IOS, Jackie
said she was dreaming of serial killers for some reason.
Jackie said she cannot read kindle books she prefers audio. Dominique
described the content of the book for a bit more. She has read from page to
page. Derry asked what audio books were mentioned in the book. Paul asked
what the audio book pat mentioned in the last meeting was called. Cearbhall
asked Dominique the name of the IOS book she gave it. Ken said that you
should use bookmarks. It is a word document book not an audio book. Cearbhall
said insert plus alt plus b gets bookmarks. Jackie asked about grammar
mistakes. Dominique pointed out the ones she noted down.
Discussion of football commenced for a while. Dominique said that she
listened to Stuart Lawler the last day and found it good. Joanne said the
thing she listened to the last day was very loud, but the voices were very
muffled. Discussion of the book commenced again with new people coming into
the meeting asking about it. She asked about bookmarks again. Windows shift
and k sets a bookmark. Paul said that she should use the JAWS menu, shift
plus f6 to find all the JAWS commands she could ever need. Pat suggested she
should check out Sharon’s shortcuts from sight and sound.
Derry asked about cearbhalls trip to Rome, but he had gone off for a while at
this point. Martin said that he provided this in Monday’s tech club. Some
jokes were made at this point. Cearbhall returned and provided a rundown on
his trip. Alt plus n and k creates a bookmark and something else but the note
taker missed it. Dominique attempted it and was successful and was happy.
Jackie suggested a name for her bookmark calling it chapter whatever.
Cearbhall suggested calling it ken. She called it mini. Press enter to save
the bookmark. She found add after searching the dialogue box. She was also
able to find the next bookmark from the book.
Dominique took the lord’s name in vain and assaulted our poor innocent ears
with some colourful language as she accidently closed the box and lost her
place in the book. Jackie told her to find mini as she had set it as her
bookmark. Someone had a phone call at this point. Dominique could not find
the insert key. Many people gave her locations to try on her keyboard. Martha
said make sure her num lock key was turned off. Cearbhall said hold alt b to
find her bookmarks. This went on for a significant period in the meeting.
Martha asked if she knew the page number control g will bring you to the page
you want to get back to. To go from heading to heading turn on browse mode
and jump from heading to heading with h key. The numlock key became a topic
of discussion for a while. The group did not see success in trying to solve
her problem with bookmarks during the meeting. Dominique described a number
of interesting books the author has written in the past.
Some jokes were made regarding cearbhall’s trip to Rome. The Spanish steps
were discussed. There are 135 of them and they slope making them
uncomfortable to climb down. The streets are all cobbled and Rome has quite a
lot of palaces around the city. He found soundscape hard to use there because
of the number of buildings. The colosseum was closed by the time he got to
it. Jackie asked how much data soundscape was using in cearbhall’s phone
Stuart said to check it go to mobile data. Cearbhall said that the food was
fantastic. His phone fell on the floor at this point. They dined outside
quite a lot while there. Cearbhall’s signal was poor during this period of
the meeting. He did confirm that he was using just over 100mb of data. Chris
went through the data setting’s in his iPhone. Pat said it depends on the
network on how much data you can use abroad with roaming. Discussion of data
continued for a while.
Unlimited data was discussed and the limits that it can have if you are
traveling abroad. Ken gave some examples of where it was not as unlimited.
Cearbhall was thanked for his summary of Rome and talk of his age came up for
some reason. He was asked for the history of the Spanish steps he gave it to
the group.
Martin asked if temple bar had a temple before for some reason. French toast
and Swiss rolls were brought up alongside Irish coffee and hamburgers. People
were hungry after the talk of bookmarks, data, and the fantastic food in
Rome. Cearbhall discussed how he travelled to and from the airport. There is
a metro system in Rome. He did not meet the Pope while there he did visit the
cisteen chapel while there. He found the chapel to be incredible. The weather
was really good no rain at all. The accommodation was quite splendid also. He
really liked the privacy of it. Paul found the thought of cars driving around
the colosseum to be interesting as the building was built so long ago. The
cars are really small in the city.
Discussion of the note takers problems as regards word came up with Martha
suggesting he get into creative writing to solve his problem. The problem
that the note taker was struggling with during the meeting was that JAWS for
some reason would not let him scroll up the document with the arrow keys. He
could scroll left and right with them but not up or down. He also discovered
that some of his notes had been moved around and were typing over previous
notes.
The numlock key came up again. Jackie discussed her set up as regards how she
uses JAWS. Her caps lock key is her JAWS key as opposed to insert. Complaints
of how hard key commands are to use became a topic of discussion.
Martin enquired on how do you invert colours on a laptop. Cearbhall said go
to settings and select display. Stuart suggested magnifier as a method of
inverting colours.
Jackie said she got her new revolute card this week. She had lots of fun
activating it. Discussion of revolute and how good they are commenced for a
while. Jackie found the customer service to be quite good. You need your
passport to apply for a card according to Jackie. You will need sighted
assistance to set up a revolute account because you need to take a picture.
The note taker agrees with this as he was required to seek sighted assistance
when he set up his own revolute card previously. Sighted people found it to
be difficult to frame a blind person in the frame of the camera. Jackie did
try to swindle some money from Paul at this point. The card costs seven euro.
You will not be charged unless you use an ATM more than five times.
Discussion of charges and whether you are charged annually for having the
account was an issue discussed. Jackie clarified the pricing system revolute
uses.
Ken asked about how the vault function works in the revolute app. Jackie
answered this for him. If you lose your card, you only lose what is on that
card and nothing else. The limit as regards tapping the card is fifty euros
according to Jackie. If you go over the amount you will have to re-enter your
pin code to reset the limit. Jackie says she prefers the system employed by
AIB as regards reaching a limit in comparison to bank of Ireland as Bank of
Ireland is not accessible.
Cearbhall asked Chris about the electronic version of the census which was
not posted because they do not use eir codes. Chris said that this was not
correct, the post office finds it difficult if you put an eir code solely as
an address they will still deliver but they will find it difficult as they
will need to search for the full address in their system which takes time.
Postmen do not use eir codes themselves as they know the area’s they work
and will go on address’s according to Chris. Cearbhall was confused because
they made a public announcement that they do not deliver to eir codes. Clare
gave her experience with eir codes to the group. Discussion of the census
continued for a while after this point. Some places still have not returned
the census or received them in the first place. Chris said he was told by
someone else that most people do not know the eir code to their address.
Cearbhall gave his eir code but the not taker did not memorise it so you all
will n
ot be able
to send him anonymous packages or letters. Martin went to Scotland and said
that giving his postcode in Belfast allowed them to find his address
immediately.
Chris clarified how postcodes are managed in the post office. Jackie asked if
Dublin had postcodes in it, is different areas. Chris confirmed they do,
Dominique also said they do.
Clare asked about her phone she discovered that she needed to turn on roaming
data. She asked how to do this. Cearbhall answered her question. Clare used
be my eyes for directions while on holidays it worked successfully for her.
Pat gave her advice on roaming and airplane mode and how to use it whilst
abroad. She said she used translation also and found it to be good. She
thanked the group for helping her. Dominique asked about the benefits of
roaming on/off Jackie clarified that roaming only applies only if you leave
the EU. For example, Northern Ireland and Britain.
Clare brought up Siri and voice over. Siri works partly offline. Siri does
not work on data according to cearbhall. Derry asked if Clare was still
teaching swimming. Clare said that she is entering a marathon for charity.
Dominique asked what the settings in roaming were. Pat reiterated that
roaming is something that you turn on outside the EU. Discussion of data and
roaming continued again for a while after this.
The group was quite energetic this week with multiple people trying to
contribute to a number of topics throughout the meeting. Unlimited and
limited data came up again. Jackie randomly got a delivery of Tesco shopping
she does not even know when she ordered it. She was quite surprised. Clare
said she never gets anything from Tesco.
Chris said that his headphones were having problems. If he pressed the button
to answer the call on the headphones the call will come through on the phone
and not the headphones. Cearbhall said to check the destination settings on
the phone. Pat said that the focus of voice over can jump if you answer with
the headphone. Ken has the same problem he finds that it is very hit or miss
he does not know when it will do this. Cearbhall said check audio settings in
voice over. Stuart said select headphones only not automatic to solve this
issue. Jackie suggested checking audio rooting to solve the issue. Ken
searched for the setting in the search bar and found it and set it to
Bluetooth headphones not automatic. Chris did the same and solved his problem.
Cearbhall lost his audio again at this point. Dominique said she never
changed her audio settings before. Discussion of the audio rooting and how
long it has been present on the iPhone commenced. Jackie said it was there
since at least 2010. This setting should work even if you are using wired
headphones as opposed to Bluetooth ones. Jackie asked if males where the only
ones having this issue. Dominique asked about Jackie’s old headphones she
was using during the meeting. She got them from down the back of the couch.
Discussion of headphones continued for a while.
Ken had a phone call during the meeting from cearbhall who was having
problems reconnecting to the meeting after being dropped out. Ken re-sent the
link to him.
Chris said he was having problems with the post people app as regards the
diversity and inclusion he could not access it with voice over. The people
played pass the parcel with him for a while passing him from person to person
until he finally was able to get some help with the app. He read out an
e-mail he received from them. They provided him with a link to the web
version of the app which should open on his iPhone. He was unsure if he
should click on the link and if it would work. They also provided him with
his log on details. He was advised not to delete the iPhone app he downloaded
from the app store by the group. Pat mentioned a law regarding accessibility
from Europe that requires that the app should be accessible. Ken suggested
making a screen recording of the app to show the issues he is having. Chris
said he will update the group next week.
Martha said the tv guide app has become accessible due to kens steler work
with the creators of the app. Cearbhall said the web link sounded like a
development website for the creators of the app. Chris did not know. Chris
said the app is an an post app. Martha compared it to intranet around an
office.
The meeting ended for most people in the group apart from cearbhall and the
notetaker. They put their heads together to try and figure out what had gone
wrong with the notetakers Microsoft word. They were successful thankfully.
