Welcome aboard todays installment of the Cork Tech Club. We had nine
participants.
Today Ken started with the focus bug on the iPhone whereby if your attempting
to call someone from the recent call log the focus jumps so you might want to
call Mary back but you ring Joseph instead. There was allot of stories about
mishaps of ringing the wrong person. This is a known bug since IOS15 so one is
hoping its sorted soon as the only way to call someone is to use the contacts
rather than the call log.
Chris discussed Siri and how good or not so good it works. It was thought
siri can be slightly more dependable than using the call log. Hey siri has
its benefits but this only works with certain headphones, when using the wired
ones you press the yoke that controls the volume and that answers and hangs up
a call, I believe its called the Microphone.
Pat brought the conversation around to emails not coming in when your on a
call while not using wifi.
Cearbhall told us about a webbing hour he was at about open source maps. The
presentation was very visual but the concept behind the idea sounds very good.
Lady W translated it as: sighted people go out and take photos of issues that
could be faced by disabled people, they feed this back to someone on a
computer who feeds it to an open source map. This project is happening in
Galway.
Dominique reminded us all about the apple event on Tuesday March 8th.
The following piece has been shortened significantly as it was traumatic to try
and record the events.
Jackie read a book by Portia Macintosh called will they, Won't they. No matter
what Jackie did Alexa would not play this book that was in her library. In the
end she had to play it from the Alexa app onto her device. A number of our
members tried asking her but with all the different accents we had present
today it still wasn't possible.
This then ended about podcasts and trying to get Alexa to play them much like
the above book Alexa struggled and she ended up playing podcasts not related.
The use of Alexa to look up words was discussed and we felt she is very useful
to spell and define words such as mustard.
We then discussed public transport and travelling with a Guide Dog or cane. We
all had negative and positive experience with travelling with the dog and a
cane.
The meeting ended with using an actifry to cook Cadbury Creme eggs.
This will be reported on next week.
