The meeting opened with a tongue-in-cheek proposal that the Visionaires run
for the European Song Contest next year. Jackie and Martin leading.
Martin reported that the attendants at the National League coffee morning
were finding great technology support from its very well-known and much
loved expert.
The demise of the iPod Touch and iPods in general got a great deal of
attention. Several members use this device and find it useful for listening
to audio books and music, leaving the iPhone free to manage other services.
Jackie was delighted to get hold of the last iPod touch because it allows
her to run IOS 12. It is useful that when apps cannot be used on the iPhone
there is a strong possibility that they can be used on the iPod.
Paul is preparing for an exotic holiday abroad and needs to update his
passport. He was assured that he can do so on line but would need sighted
assistance to take the correct photo. He was cautioned to make sure that he
show no pleasure in having his image taken.
No Garda signature is required. The on-line service looks after the date
stamp.
Martin looked for people's experience of Eventbrite. Various people found
that they could use Eventbrite in former years but now they cannot complete
there transactions.
Despite all the advocating work of public agencies and users alike, the BOI
app remains inaccessible. The support service is much better with AIB and
Ulster banks and the apps reflect this greater usability.
Pat indicated that the Competition and Consumer Protection commission is
available as a resource for anyone frustrated by this lack of accessibility
to public services.
Jackie described the Quick Access Toolbar which is available in Windows as a
quick way to send emails from within Microsoft Word. This can be accessed by
pressing alt to open the menu bar and then up-arrow once to the quick access
toolbar.
Jackie tried out the JAWS OCR function on her laptop and found that it would
not work within Microsoft Edge but did work fine in Adobe Acrobat. Tech.
support helped to make Adobe her default PDF reader. Cearbhall explained
that this can be easily done by pressing the Windows key and typing part of
the word "default" to bring up the Default apps dialog. Arrowing up and down
the list of services, (email, Word Processing, PDF, etc), offers a list of
applications that can be selected as the default for that service.
Stuart is off to demonstrate Blind Tennis next week at the MayFest 2022
extravaganza run by Vision Sports Ireland. We wish him the best of luck
defending his title.
Dominique revealed that she has completed her reading of "Personal Power" by
Michael Feir. She found that it gave a good, clear account of a wide variety
of apps and functions on the iPhone. Anyone who missed Dominique's email can

Martin discovered that the public library service in Ireland is bringing in
a service making the "C-PEN Reader" available for people with dyslexia. This
is a reading tool that is given to readers as they need them. It is not yet
available in all libraries. Martin to investigate and report.
A passionate discussion arose about choices of voices to use in voiceover.
Moira was definitely not popular but the Irish male voice was favoured.
Mispronunciations vary from voice to voice but can be corrected in
Pronunciation settings within the Voiceover speech settings. Interestingly,
in the "Applications" setting within Voiceover, different voices can be set
to appear in different apps to make life more interesting. Setting
pronunciation changes to "All apps" will ensure that the change only needs
to be made once. turning this setting off opens a choice of any specific app
to which the change will apply.
Dominique reported difficulty selecting a favourite program within the RTE
Player on the iPhone. The controls consist of differently coloured buttons
that cannot be distinguished by Voiceover.
The meeting ended in readiness for a good lunch before a gruelling Ireland
v.
Toulouse match in the Heineken Champions Cup.
