In attendance: 14 participants
Des Keaney, Pat McCarthy, Ken Walsh, Chris Egan, Martha Parkinson, Noreen
Meagher, Derry Walsh, Jackie McBrearty, Dominique Farrell, Sean Kavanagh,
Martin Kelly, Pat Walsh, Paul Griffith, Cearbhall O'Meadhra.
Apologies: Gavin Allman
Dominique came under fire when some members found that they could not open an
URL that was included in a few different forwarded messages to the list.
Cearbhall pointed out that when a message is forwarded, the system places "> +
carriage return + <" instead of the usual line feed character and this breaks
up a URL that is wrapped around two or more lines in the original message. In
that case, the URL needs to be edited to remove these characters and reassemble
the original address.
Paul mentioned that Facebook, tries to insert the wrong information when he is
typing an email address that he has not used before and this can get very
messy. The members recognised that this was predictive text at work and
suggested that he disable predictive text to avoid the problem.
Cearbhall was excited about the discovery of "Live Location" in WhatsApp. His
family has just finished following the journey of a family member from Dublin
to London by boat and car. WhatsApp displays an image of the face of the driver
in a box that is moving along a route. Placenames and road names are displayed
to indicate the passing environment as the journey continues. Unfortunately
the mapping is inaccessible but it is well-worth knowing about it. The live
location feature allows you to share your real-time location for a specific
amount of time with the participants of an individual or group chat. You can
control whether and how long to share your live location. You can also stop
sharing your live location at any time. Once stopped or expired, your live
location is no longer be shared. Individuals who you shared your live location
with will continue to see the location you shared as a static thumbnail image,
and can tap the image to see your last updated location. Full details of how to
enable this feature can be read at:

Ken demonstrated the use of Emoji symbols in a text message:
1. He typed some text and then tapped the "Emoji" button at the bottom
left of the iPhone screen;
2. He then swept left and right until he found the Emoji that he wanted
and double tapped to enter it into the message body;
3. He then Clicked the "Letters" button and added some more text to
complete the message;
4. swept right to "Send" on the right edge of the message body.
He pointed out that the "Send" button is always present, no matter which
keyboard (letters, Emoji or numbers) is open below.
ðMartin pointed out that the Emoji keyboard can be raised in windows by
pressing the windows key and full stop. ðâ
Derry asked for information on the Microsoft Surface Pro. It is very hard to
find an exact description of the device but it is clear that it is Microsoft's
answer to Touch screen technology, using a light pen to write on a white board
on the screen when necessary. There is a large range of products from netbooks
to full desktops within the "Touch" series of devices. The Surface Pro is one
of the more popular models without a keyboard. Audio, visual, messaging, email
and internet are available as standard running a modified version of Windows
10. An external keyboard is available, commonly contained in a cover that holds
the Surface screen in the lid.
Martha, Jackie and des engaged in a discussion of the various choices of
Bluetooth keyboard including, Logitech, Zagg and other models.
Martin reported on his recent commission to compare Narrator, JAWS and NVDA and
see how they worked with Microsoft Word in Read Only mode. He found that
Narrator and NVDA worked fine with the document but JAWS did not do so until he
pressed f6 to enable editing mode. He was so pleased with Cortana and its
usefulness in providing answers to him that he was given a new commission: To
see if he could send an email and a text message using Cortana and to report on
how it interacted with the three screen readers. Thank you Martin!
He explained that the Cortana app offers a chat-like experience, so you speak
or type using plain English words. Cortana may ask questions to clarify what
you want done. In the case of reminders, for example, Cortana will tell you
itâs created the reminder, or say it canât create the reminder. It displays
your previous interactions, so you can scroll back and see your questions and
Cortanaâs answers. More information on installing and using Cortana is
available at:

Martha is glad to be getting back into full harness again, although still
working from home. Her department has provided her with a new softphone
application, accessible with JAWS. Special scripts have been written by Blazie
Engineers from freedom Scientific, which enable JAWS to interact fully with the
softphone program. She will be using a noise cancelling Plantronics headset. If
this becomes too heavy or too stifling, she can go back to her original single
ear headset .
The meeting ended
All the best,
Cearbhall
