A larger attendance than usual started with a look back at the origins of RP
Ireland from its early days in the 1980's compared to the substantial growth
in research activity today.
Both Pat and Clare reported receiving a message that their "voucher has
expired" as soon as they logged in to Zoom. As this was a new event, no-one
could offer an explanation. Research shows that vouchers and coupons are
available to discount various Zoom plans and this implies that there is
nothing to worry about here as personal accounts are free for ever.

Members expressed disappointment that Peter was leaving Fighting blindness
and wished him well for the future in his posting to NCBI.
Jackie was stricken with the Gaeilge literary bug and wondered how to achieve
the "síneadh fada " on vowels in Irish. She learned that pressing the
combination control+alt+' followed by any of the vowel letters does the job
and was delighted to share this discovery with the meeting.

Cearbhall regretted the passing of the "séimhiú", pronounced “SHAY-voo,”,
which literally means “softening/gentling”). He has two of them in his own
name!
Clare wanted some help with lights controlled by Alexa. Jackie and Paul
claimed a colourful plethora of smart bulbs, some of which have the Lepro
brand name. Smart plugs came next and Ken waded in with his bedroom light.
Jackie topped it all by boasting that her 12 Alexa's control her electric
blanket. She accompanied this with a warm smile!
Joanne raised the question of responding to messages in WhatsApp. Ken
explained that she should swipe down with one finger for options and find the
send button in the list that appeared.
Since Facebook acquired WhatsApp, there is some confusion between Messenger
and WhatsApp. It was clarified that Messenger is a Facebook messaging service
and separate from WhatsApp.
Joanne explained that she had to remove Voiceover in order to activate a
chosen film in TikTok. Ken and Jackie agreed that this was the only way to
manage this function.
Paul was given the comfort that his deleted files and messages go to the bin
folder for 30 days from which they can be recovered if mistakenly deleted.
The classic scanner app, KNFB Reader is now OneStep Reader AND IS supported
by Sensotek, a partner of the National federation of the Blind in the US. It
is available as "One step Reader" running on IOS and Android.
