Like Tiago said, spindles is just as important as partitions. If you have 5
partitions but only one drive, you are still at a bottle neck.

So, it depends on how many drives you have available.

Optimum would be 7:

2 mirrored with 2 partitions for OS and programs
2 mirrored with 2 partitions for page file and log files.
3 in Raid5 for the DB.

4 drives would be minimum IMHO:

2 mirrored with 2 partitions, OS/programs and log files
2 mirrored with 2 partitions, page file and DB.

Remember, if you are using standard edition, which has a max IS size of
16GB, your DB partition should be 32GB to allow for recovery.
