Yes, here, to the best of my ability is the layout. Mail comes to any of the 41 domain names that we are known by. Conway.com is one of them. Mail for Conway.com arrives at the IIS5 SMTP server. I receives the mail, places it in the queue, and then immediately forwards it to the exchange server. ONLY internal users and this SMTP server can send email to the exchange server. The SMTP server is used to send EXTERNAL SMTP mail to the exchange server, which then deposits it into the users mailbox. All users in this network talk directly to the exchange server, even for SMTP relaying and do NOT communicate with the IIS5 SMTP relay server. That is dedicated to delivering external mail to the internal exchange server. [OUTBOUND INTERNET MAIL] ^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^ INBOUND INTERNET MAIL->->->->-[IIS5 SMTP SERVER]->->->->[EXCHANGE SERVER]<-<-<-<-(USERS) Mail with "return-path: <>" stops here^^^ And an event 4000 is logged (Unable to connect to remote server) Hope this helps..... -----Original Message----- From: ONG Liang Bu (CSC) [mailto:lbong@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 9:28 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: PLEASE READ:SMTP forwarder isn't forwarding messages with "return -path <>". http://www.MSExchange.org/ Just curious, is the IIS in the DMZ acts as smart relay and forward mails to internal Exchange servers, you mentioned "remote domains", means you have more than one tcp/ip domains? -----Original Message----- From: Lenny Burns [mailto:lenny.burns@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 10:17 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: PLEASE READ:SMTP forwarder isn't forwardin g messages with "return -path <>". http://www.MSExchange.org/ Postmaster is available, but no, they are not delivered there either. -----Original Message----- From: ONG Liang Bu (CSC) [mailto:lbong@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 7:31 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: PLEASE READ:SMTP forwarder isn't forwarding messages with "return -path <>". http://www.MSExchange.org/ Do you define a Postmaster email address for yr domain? I will assume all mails from <> are NDRs and will be delivered to postmaster@xxxxxxxxxx If you already have postmaster address then I am at a lost also. -----Original Message----- From: Lenny Burns [mailto:lenny.burns@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 7:36 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] PLEASE READ:SMTP forwarder isn't forwarding messages with "return -path <>". Importance: High http://www.MSExchange.org/ I have posted this several times using various descriptions of the problem. !!!I REALLY NEED EXPERT HELP HERE!!!! I have researched this situation everywhere and still nothing works. I put my exchange server inside the firewall and used a IIS5 (windows 2000) SMTP server to FORWARD MAIL to it. Only remote domains in the list that I entered are forwarded. I specified the exchange server IP in []'s for each remote forwarded domain. ALL email is forwarded now. I have not installed virus or Spam filtration software on the forwarder. All seemed fine, until I realized that all INBOUND emails with a "return-path: <>" in the header are being dropped in BADMAIL. I look on the event log of the forwarder, and see: ===================================== Event Type: Warning Event Source: smtpsvc Event Category: None Event ID: 4000 Date: 1/28/2003 Time: 6:16:54 PM User: N/A Computer: MAILGUARD Description: Message delivery to the remote domain 'conway.com' failed for the following reason: Unable to successfully connect to the remote server. Data: 0000: 3a 02 04 c0 :..À ===================================== This happens once for every message with a "return-path: <>" in the header Further research revealed that these messages are NDRs from AOL but MOSTLY messages from List servers. We NEED to get these emails!!! So, here's what testing I have done.. If I drop these messages into the PICKUP folder, they get delivered. I telnetted into the local host for the forwarder, sent a message from <> to myself. It arrived. I telnetted into the exchange server, sent a message from <> to myself. It arrived. (I am assuming these emails are the same as the ones that have a "return-path: <>" in them.) I send a message to the foreign list server with a command that makes it reply, and it too lands in BADMAIL. If email arrives from an exterior server with "return-path: <>" in the header, it drops to badmail and I cant stop it. What should I do? Im completely stumped, and this has been going on for over a month now. ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSExchange.org Discussion List as: lbong@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe send a blank email to $subst('Email.Unsub') ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSExchange.org Discussion List as: Lenny.burns@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe send a blank email to $subst('Email.Unsub') ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSExchange.org Discussion List as: lbong@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe send a blank email to $subst('Email.Unsub') ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: http://www.webelists.com/cgi/lyris.pl?enter=exchangelist Exchange Newsletters: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/newsletter.asp Exchange FAQ: http://www.msexchange.org/pages/larticle.asp?type=FAQ ------------------------------------------------------ ISA Server Resource Site: http://www.isaserver.org Windows Security Resource Site: http://www.windowsecurity.com/ Windows 2000/NT Fax Solutions: http://www.ntfaxfaq.com ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSExchange.org Discussion List as: Lenny.burns@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe send a blank email to $subst('Email.Unsub')
