Article from ZDNet but not from me: The cost of upgrading to Outlook 2003: Your BlackBerry For what seems like a year now, I've been working with the beta of Outlook 2003. I'd upgrade to the release version now that Office 2003 is shipping, but the beta of Office 2003 won't uninstall from my system. (That's a story for another day.) But one thing I've learned is that the software required for synching RIM's BlackBerries with Microsoft's Exchange servers doesn't work if you install Outlook 2003. Apparently, something under the hood changed in Outlook that was enough to break the BlackBerry software. In e-mails from the company (e-mails that I can't receive on the GSM/GPRS BlackBerry 7230 because I can't register it with our company's Exchange servers), RIM acknowledged the incompatibility, saying it would probably have an update in early 2004. My advice to BlackBerry owners: Don't upgrade to Outlook 2003. My advice to RIM: Speed up your development. Outlook 2003 has been around long enough to QA your software and iron out any problems. The three-month delay is inexcusable. One thing to note is BBES requires Outlook client to be installed on the server. And, exchange server doesn't like it when you install outlook on the same server running exchange. I used get very frequent mapi errors an other bunch of errors. After migrating to Exchange 2000, the BBES is runnign in a separate server that is not running exchange server. This has been quite stable. -----Original Message----- From: Jared Johnson [mailto:jaredsjazz@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, December 08, 2003 4:14 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] Exchange and Blackberry http://www.MSExchange.org/ Hi All Guru's Do any of you have your Blackberry server installed on your Exchange server box and both workign perfectly together on the same box? I'm debating whether to save $10,000.00 and not purchase an extra Blackberry server if I can just install the server software on my Exchange server box (which is Heavly loaded with 4 CPU's, etc., so resources are not an issue.)
