To: Members & Friends of the East Valley Astronomy Club

The East Valley Astronomy Club will conduct our monthly general meeting this
Friday evening - November 15th.  The meeting will take place in the usual
location - the Shakespeare room at the Southeast Regional Library in
Gilbert, beginning at 7:30 pm.  We have a full agenda this month, packed
with compelling topics, and another terrific speaker.  Our meetings are
always a great opportunity to connect with like-minded colleagues, and to
make some new friends and acquaintances.

We will conduct our annual elections for 2020 officers and Board members
during this month's meeting.  We have candidates interested in each open
position, but will still be accepting nominations and volunteers from the
membership present at the meeting.  This will be your final chance to toss
your name into consideration for a 2020 club governing position for a one
year term.  Please note that only members in good standing with fully paid
2019 dues will be eligible to vote in 2020 elections.

This month's featured speaker is Dr. Jessica Noviello, a postdoctoral
scholar at Arizona State University and an expert on asteroids and icy
satellites, particularly Jupiter's moon Europa which will be the subject of
her talk. Europa is one of the very few places in the solar system with
confirmed liquid water, which makes it an important astrobiological target.
However, the heat and salt transport from the ocean, through the ice shell,
to the surface is not well understood, partially due to a lack of usable
images of most of Europa's surface.  Dr. Noviello will talk about her work
mapping Europa's surface and will address some of the fundamental questions
about Europa's geology and structure.  The recent detection of plumes on
Europa from the Hubble Space Telescope has only puzzled planetary scientists
further.  Jessica is an active space science communicator and will explain
the science questions the field is trying to answer.  This will be a
fascinating and timely discussion that you will not want to miss!

As a reminder, there will not be a regular meeting next month in December -
we will be having our annual Christmas party!  We are extremely fortunate to
have Janet Evelyn mastermind this year's event to reprise the marvelous

Our club is, of course, much more than just monthly meetings.  Members can
take advantage of other opportunities to get involved in fun and gratifying
activities include volunteering at the observatory - GRCO, helping with our
public star parties, school outreach events, field trips, or discussion
