Subject: summing up/ end of the year reflection

To Aviva and any other interested teachers,

Summing up with a class (especially with a 12th grade class or
one you are finishing with) is extremely important in my opinion.
First I try to do a feedback page getting them to reflect on the years
they studied with me as their teacher (and even before, if you like).
I ask them to think about what they remember learning (liked!!)
and then what they didn't like learning. I also ask them to assess
themselves and grade themselves. I feel that this is really important.
(interesting enough, most kids lower their grade)

Another nice thing to do is write a personal letter (or poem ) to
each student. I have done this and believe me it is really nice.
Of course I write ONLY good things in the letter. It takes time
as you really want to relate to each student. I read a few of
them in front of the class.. (not the too personal ones).

Another idea is a letter to the class. How you feel about the
years you taught them and wishes for the future etc.

Reflection , is a very important thing to do. As teachers we need
to do it every day in order to be better teachers . Our students also
need to reflect and most of them really try and see how much they
have learned and where they are and what they have done to get there.

For instance on a feedback page I might ask the pupil to explain
why he thinks he didn't make enough of an effort. Some might say
that the topics taught were boring while others will simply say that
they had a lot of school work in other subjects. BUT they do know
why.

If you want something more in the way of group work.. Have them
brainstorm and see what they remember learning. They could even
be creative and make posters illustrating (or powerpoint presentations or....)
what they remember. The reflection could be done communally in
order to make it more enjoyable and to help each remember.

Either way, a serious reflection or a fun acitivy in order to sum up
the years of English is very important both for the kids and the teachers.

I hope I've given you some direction..I too am completing 3 years
with a class and need to plan such a lesson .

If you want copies of feedback pages I"ve used just write me and I'll
send you copies which you can adapt.

Good luck,
Aviva
