According to the regulations, schools that seek and get approval from their local authorities for the transition to the five-day week will get permission from the Education Ministry to do so. The new rules take effect immediately, meaning schools can already move to a five-day week this coming school year, which begins on September 1. Next year, if the Dovrat Committee recommendations are accepted in full, the transition to the five-day school week will gradually begin to be implemented throughout the school system. There are already 17 schools that have asked permission from the Education Ministry to move to a five-day week. The two teachers unions are vehemently opposed to the plan, as are the national parents association, MKs, and social welfare organizations. Some officials from the teachers union said the fear is that with the switch to the five-day week, students from poorer areas will be left to wander the streets when not in school.
