One thing I like to do near the end of the year,
I Xerox the list of 'new words' at the end of each chapter, and at the
beginning of every lesson I give the pupils a list (starting from unit 1 and
progressing a unit a lesson).
The pupils get about 5 minutes to translate as many words as they can
remember, then they can look them up or ask a friend. They are always
surprised how much they learnt, and there is a great feeling of
satisfaction, especially among weaker students. I emphasize that it's not a
test, just for personal knowledge. I might ask "Who got more than ten?" and
see how many respond with a smile. Then near the very last lesson we could
have a game with all the words which suddenly become less daunting.
Just an idea.
