Hi all,

This is the first call for articles for the next issue (Issue # 4) of The
Rag, which will be coming out the first or second week of September 2007. We
will need your articles by the end of July.

I know that most of you have a very heavy work schedule, and are waiting for
the breathing room that the summer promises, at least in part. However, I am
going to make the request for articles a little more personal this time.

I came up with the idea of the English Teachers Network in 1995. It was my
belief then that teachers would be willing and able to share their ideas,
experiences and inspirations through such a network. And I think that this
vision has materialized. Since then, I have spent long hours - in addition
to my regular work day - developing and maintaining the ETNI site. Sometimes
with help from others. At other times, running it all completely by myself.
ETNI receives no outside funding, and what costs there are, come from my own
pocket. I am more than willing to continue doing this, as long as I believe
that ETNI is still serving its original purpose.
In return, I have not asked for member dues, or any other sort of payment
from ETNIers in order to help keep things running. Nor am I willing to
accept paid advertisement. My only request from ETNIers is that they help
ETNI move forward by sharing their ideas, experiences and inspirations with
each other.

I see "The Rag" as an integral part of this effort. Although excellent ideas
flow through the ETNI mailing list, they remain buried in the ETNI mail
archives. And although English teachers have been writing articles for a
printed publication for years, these articles remain buried on bookshelves,
with no easy access to the articles by keyword search or by interested
parties who never received the printed copy. It is time that we reach out,
so that everyone can read our ideas. We have no idea how wide our target
audience is, and I don't believe in creating "select" audiences.

I believe I am doing my part in working towards this vision. I ask you to do
so also. Take a few hours, days if needed, and write an in-depth article
about something that has to do with your teaching - something which is
unique to you, and which you know will be of benefit to others.

Please send your article to my address - david@xxxxxxxx

Remember, we are in this together.

David
