Course at Tel Aviv University For the 16th time, the once-a-week course at Tel Aviv University will be preparing English teachers to introduce students to the skill ? or is it an art? ? of translation. Offered in the 11th and 12th grades in high schools throughout the country, the translation course prepares students for a separate 2-point bagrut. More important, it offers insights into the workings of English and of Hebrew, as well as an unusually broad range of texts, styles and topics. Finally, it draws attention to the tricky challenge of translation, and the myriad differences between Hebrew and English. The year-long course for teachers is offered on Wednesday afternoons (4:30 till 7:30) on the campus of Tel Aviv University. It will be taught this year by Miriam Sheppes, a longtime teacher of translation at Beit Berl College, who has also taught the translation course to her own high school students. The academic advisor is Dr. Miriam Shlesinger, head of the Translation Department at Bar Ilan University. The course focuses on translation from English into Hebrew (the native language of most of our students), which means, of course, that the teacher too must have a fluent command of both languages. Material covered includes practice in translating different types of texts, as well as systematic discussions of typical differences between languages. In fact, 30 points of the bagrut exam relate to students? ability to analyze the problems they encounter. To receive a syllabus or to apply for the course (titled: Meyumanuyot ha-Targum), please contact the Hishtalmuyot department at the School of Education of Tel Aviv University: 03-6408466 or 6407205. ##### To send a message to the ETNI list email: etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ##### ##### Send queries and questions to: ask@xxxxxxxx #####
