* General Sir Edmund Allenby was sent to Palestine in June 1917 after
Britain had lost two major battles against the Turks. When Jerusalem was
captured "as a Christmas present to the British people," it was the first
undeniable British victory of the war. Shortly afterwards he was assisted
by the Judeans of the Fusiliers, the first Jewish fighting unit since the
Maccabees. The effect on morale was huge, and the consequences for Jewish
history were enormous. *
* Elkan D. Levy was until his Aliyah in 2011, the Director of the Office
of Small Communities, responsible for 70 communities in the UK, from Truro
to Margate and from Bognor to north of Aberdeen. A Solicitor for 30
years, he also served as President of the United Synagogue from 1996-99.
Educated in London, Israel and New York, Elkan is well-known as a dynamic
lecturer who is deeply interested in British and World Jewry, its past and
its future. He believes passionately in the unity of the Jewish people,
and the religious imperative of speaking to all Jews, of all levels of
observance. *
