**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** Dear teachers, The first time I voiced the following was at the ETAI conference at the ETAI session which was attended by at least one Ministry inspector. Some of us still have that sinking feeling about the unfortunate Mo'ed Alef Modules E,F,G results for the eleventh graders who took the exam in May. The letter to the Ministry about the Mo'ed Alef modular exam contained 100 signatures of concerned teachers (I presume that some more were added since July 20). My guess is that this number represents at least 10% of high schools in Israel (calculating on average one class from each high school that took E,F and G and presuming there are around 1000 such high schools in Israel). Please correct me if I'm way off. It's actually irrelevant whether 100 signatures are "a lot or a little". We should compare this number to the number of teachers who thought Mo'ed Alef was "fine". I suggest asking this question on ETNI. If 100 teachers state that the exam was what they had expected, we can either conclude that the rest of us are moaners or else we can develop the results into a professional debate about testing. The Moe'd Bet exam of July 15, I'm sure most of you and your pupils agree, was much easier and more along the lines of what we had prepared the pupils for. This indicates that the problem lies in the specific exam of May 18, i.e. Mo'ed Alef, and not in the NBA system. Difficult or problematic exams have occurred in the past in other subjects. Situations like these can be corrected firstly by acknowledging that there was a problem and secondly by raising the grades. Since some of the pupils were not able/available to take the Mo'ed Bet exam, they should be helped. They worked hard and they deserve our support, persistence and courage to speak out.
