Money: It is now much cheaper to offer online classes to huge numbers of students (note: that's one teacher, 10,000 students) 2. Interaction/community: Improved ability to provide interactive exercises, some "personal" feedback (from humans), online forums which create community, intelligent computerized agents which evaluate submitted assignments Challenges - a college or a university is a "credentialing" body, but they must be sure that it is YOU who did the work. Most of these courses get around this "credentialing" issue by giving "graduates" a "certificate of completion" rather than a degree.
