---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Marlene <marlenegay@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: literature Once upon a time, in the 1960's, students in high school, 12th grade had to study English literature for the Bagrut. HOTS hadn't been invented yet, but there were questions to be answered. The students studied for the exam. A decade or so later, the oral bagrut was added to test English for communication. The students practiced with their teachers and/or volunteers. They knew how to speak English, a very practical skill for today's job market. Nevertheless, students at university, found academic texts extremely challenging. Therefore, additional practice with unseens was demanded. Students stopped preparing for exams, I.e., unseens. Tutors and private schools held marathon sessions practicing the art of answering unseens. Even the low level student will be able to answer the questions with the special technique even without understanding!! But enough with LOTS and on with HOTS. Students now will be their own teachers and analyze their method of understanding. So now students come to college and can tackle academic texts. Or can they? They've got holes in their knowledge - of the passive tense, vocabulary, word families, use of the dictionary, etc. These topics should have been covered in the earlier grades. Authentic literature is fine for the native speaker/strong student. The others require the simplified version or at least glossed. The content is great - but if you have to look up every word - it's too difficult.
