Subject: Monday, May 11, 2015 - Bar-Ilan Creative Writing Seminar with
Robin Hemley

The Shaindy Rudoff Graduate Program in Creative Writing invites you to
participate in a one-day seminar at Bar-Ilan University with acclaimed
writer Robin Hemley.

Ekphrasis

In this seminar, Robin Hemley will discuss the various ways in which
writers engage with visual art, in particular, photography. The
workshop will focus on ekphrasis: verbal representations of visual
representations. From notional ekphrasis (writing about imaginary
works of art, such as Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” or Keats’
“Ode on a Grecian Urn”) to documentary and lyric ekphrasis, Hemley
will discuss the various ways in which authors have engaged with
visual representation.

During the seminar, you’ll try your hand at notional ekphrasis as well
as other forms. Participants will be asked to bring to the workshop
three postcards and two family photographs (not to be shared with any
other participants beforehand). In addition, participants should also
write a brief (up to 250 words) description of a piece of visual art
that exists to date only in their imagination.
