---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Sternlicht <starlightfam@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: About the new subject Diplomacy and International Communication in English Based on the announcement at the ETAI conference last summer, online registration and registration as a result of letters sent to all schools nation-wide in the fall, more than 800 teachers registered to be trained. It is reasonable to conclude that this new elective represents an idea whose time has come. So far, research, curriculum development and input from an incredible group of 32 teachers (selected for their background in media studies, ethics, sociology, international relations or conflict resolution studies) have been progressing towards the building of a robust and rigorous 3-year curriculum in the primary course, Communication Skills. It utilizes active learning frameworks to build interpersonal communication skills, intercultural sensitivity, global awareness, reasoning and decision making skills. The subject advances the proficiency of students who study English at the 5 point level and is studied in addition to and separate from the general English studies. The teachers currently being trained will teach it beginning next September, either as an area-wide study subject or within their schools. I am sure that towns that offer it as an area-wide Bagrut choice, will publicize the offer in the coming months. As a 5 point elective studied towards matriculation, students will study it as described below: Primary ( (בסיס Extension (הרחבה) Communication Skills Translation Skills OR Conflict Management & Resolution 3 points 2 points 2 points 3 weekly hours in grades 10-12 3 weekly hours in grades 11-12 3 weekly hours in grades 11-12 60% External assessment 40% School assessment 40% School assessment We are midway through training the pilot group of teachers. Next year, once these teachers have tested out and adapted materials, there will be several courses in various locations in the country to train new teachers. We expect these training courses to open in the next year.
