Subject: teacherr's strike

This so-called teacher's strike is a farce. We are on strike for better wages, better conditions but none of the teachers or the unions believe anything will change. We are opposed to reforms but the ministry ignores us. The strike is called and schools are open for business as usual. Principals and administrators, security guards and maintenance staff are in schools as if there is no strike and students are expected to be in school. Teachers stay home or sit in staff rooms and drink coffee. Religious schools and yeshiva ignore the strike altogether. Many teachers give lessons as well.

If we really want to effect change teachers must stand outside the school with picket signs and not allow anybody - not principals, not administration, not maintenance staff to enter the building. Students should be permitted to be in school yard or told to return home. Civil disobedience is how we effected change in Canada. Here, unions wave the political banner and then back down. We teachers don't speak out for our rights and pretend everything is okay. Two years ago we demonstrated in front of the Knesset. We need to do that everyday. We need to stand in front of schools. In Montreal, I recall a strike in a snowstorm with below freezing temperatures. We got results!
