After finally making headway with my hakbatza group at Ort, the vice principal waltzes in and says "Everybody studying in my group will not be doing 1 "unit" (yechida), but rather gemer." This was after I had taught them what we now call LOTS, i.e., test strategies or how to answer unseens without necessarily understanding much of the content. I've had students at mechina (college preparatory) who have honed their LOTS skills to obtain high grades in reading comprehension, though without any real comprehension. And now we're raising the bar even higher. What are the students' needs? Wouldn't they prefer improving their speaking skills? Are they all university bound? Or maybe they want to study physical education or art or Bible studies or Hebrew literature... Why must they pass English - on the level of authentic literature? What's next - rhetoric?
