Subject: pronunciation
Once again, pronunciation depends on the ability to hear the sound
correctly.
A fun exercise to do with any class from third grade till 12th, is to put
about 10 minimal pairs on the board in columns (bed - bad) and write 1 above
one column and 2 above the other. At first you read a word from one of the
columns, facing the class and ask them to identify which column you read
from. You get the whole class to paqrticipate all the time, by asking for a
show of hands for each column. When they start to be able to identify the
difference, partly by looking at your mouth, you turn yourback on the class,
so they get no visual feedback, and do the same thing.
This exercise also teaches them something about spelling e.g. bed, read,
said.
