Dear Renee,
My classroom has five sections, but is otherwise very similar to yours. The
simplest books are Dr. Seuss for example. The next level up are picture books.
Then I have easy chapter books like the Magic Tree House, and Bailey School
Kids. The next group are books by Beverly Cleary (Ramona) and these are about
third grade level. The most difficult are the ones about the level of Harry
Potter.J
Hope that is helpful.

Subject: categorizing library books

 Dear Etniers,
This year our school is participating in the Jade BarShalom Books 4 Israel
project. We have been receiving hundreds of excellent library books and are
in the process of sorting them out. Our English library is presently color
coded according to levels, from level 1-7, + a native speakers' section,
more or less according to the criteria for simplified readers. The new
books
are all authentic, (i.e. NOT simplified readers) and we are finding it
difficult to decide how to divide them. Our English coodinator had an idea
 - why not change the whole system, and divide ALL the books into 3 levels -
foundation, intermediate, and proficiency? That is - levels 1-2 will be
coded foundation, levels 3,4, and maybe 5 will become intermediate, and
levels 6+ will be labeled proficiency. I am interested in your opinion.
Has
any other school divided their books this way? Do you think this is a good
idea? Can you forsee any problems with only 3 levels of books?
Personally, I would tend to leave the lower level books as is, and maybe put
levels 5 and up into one category, i.e. advanced readers.
Looking forward to your comments and suggestions,
Renee Binyamini
