Recipients for this years Myrtle Wreath Award included Rena Cohen and Jade Bar-Shalom, who co-founded the Books for Israel Project to bring English-language books to Israeli public schools. The Myrtle Wreath is a citation of honor given to a number of outstanding individuals who have made distinguished contributions in the fields of education, the arts, medicine, literature, journalism, or social welfare. In accepting the award on behalf of all of the volunteers of Books for Israel Project in the U.S., England, Canada and Israel, Rena Cohen began by thanking the Hadassah organization for its lifesaving work in Israel and reading the Books for Israels statement, which appears on its website home page at BooksforIsrael.com, against terrorism. In her remarks, Cohen noted that Books for Israel is a nonviolent response against the corrosive and destructive effects of the terrorist campaign being waged against Israel, reaffirming life and the value of life to further education and the hope of Israeli society, and of all people of good will, to see a better day for their children. She concluded that Books for Israel that Jews and Christians in the English speaking world have been able to unite with Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze in Israel against the isolation of Israel and for a positive project that encourages Israeli teachers to persevere and Israels children to continue learning despite the great burden that has been imposed upon them by attacks, the threat of attacks, and a relentless propaganda campaign of hatred. She ended by saying, Terrorists would like us to believe that we are powerless against them, but we are not. The Books for Israel Project is a demonstration that hope can prevail against the discouragement and despair they breed. We are grateful to everyone who has come forward to work with us. We are dedicated to our children, and to their future, and we are grateful to Hadassah for your recognition and your lifesaving work. The Books for Israel Project is an international, all-volunteer grassroots Project that has brought over 21 tons of English literature to Israels public schools since its founding in October 2002.
