The people of Iraq are facing renewed attack, even while they struggle to
live with the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War. What might be the health,
ecological and political ramifications?

The impacts of the 1991 war are documented. Bombing and sabotage in 1991
turned the Persian Gulf into the world's largest oil spill and a massive
black cloud from burning oil could be seen from space. Exposure to
untreated water, a toxic soup of chemicals and depleted uranium has led to a
host of illnesses. Much worse is projected should there be another all-out
attack.

Will the politics of oil be allowed to undermine the legitimacy of U.N.
inspections, the International Criminal Court and the even enforcement of
international law?

Panelists:

Colleen Beaumier: Liberal MP for Brampton West-Mississauga, recently
returned from a trip to Iraq. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister
of Revenue; Member of the Sub-Committee on Human Rights.
Peter Tabuns: Executive Director, GreenPeace
H. Scott Fairley LL.B.: An international lawyer in private practice in
Toronto;
past President of the Canadian Council on International Law.
Moustafa Koc: associate professor at the Department of Sociology, and
coordinator of the Centre for Studies in Food Security, Ryerson
University; member of the recent Humanitarian Assessment Mission to

Wednesday March 5, 7:30-9:30 pm

Kyoto's here and the time has come for us to curb our polluting ways. During
the Kyoto debate we were told that everyone would have to make sacrifices in
order to achieve a more breathable world. What will citizens be asked to do,
and how will business and government measures filter down to the individual?
Governments and corporations are moving forward to put the spirit of the
accord into action. This can be an exciting time for Canada. There is
renewed talk of investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency,
sustainable transportation and smart growth. Who is on the leading edge of
Kyoto implementation and who is lagging behind?
