The weather was wonderful for our Great Backyard Bird Count walk at Warren Wilson on Feb 18th. A group of 7 people birded parts of the WWC campus and Owen Park. Birds were very vocal - probably gearing up for spring! There were few surprises in terms of species seen and heard, but the highlights were a Hermit Thrush that gave everyone good views while it fed on berries, a Savannah Sparrow perched at the top of a small tree out in the open, and White-crowned Sparrows that eluded us until the end of the walk, when they (somewhat magically) appeared out of a hedgerow. Many thanks to WWC student Austin Patton for leading the walk, and to the group of birders who spent the morning gathering data for the GBBC!
