Took the Warren Wilson College students from my field ornithology class out
this morning to the WWC fields and spotted that beautiful flock of American
pipits as seen by Alan yesterday. The sun was out so watching them fly in large
flocks in the strong winds made them glisten and glitter in the sky and I
encourage folks to get out there to watch this beautiful spectacle! They seems
to be flying back and forth between those two large fields. And I stopped at
Owen Park after class and saw the 2 Greater White fronted geese in the larger
back pond with the Canadas and they were about 20 ft away from the parking lot
so great opportunities to see them in addition to the one lonely Coot.

near the saw mill to look for American Pipets and later in the field east of
WWC Road near the bridge over the Swannanoa River. There were lots of pipets
flying near the sawmill, perhaps 100. They are difficult to see on the
ground due to their small size and the inability to get close before they fly
away. Lucky there were a few perched in a tree that provided a photo.
Savannah Sparrows were seen along one of the ditches. In the field near the
bridge, White-crowned Sparrows were evident and, as the morning warmed a
Red-shouldered Hawk flew over. The usual birds were around too, and I
thought the American Crow was rather graceful as it flew above me. What a
beautiful day!
