Hello Birding Friends.
As many of you know, EMAS conducts a Birdathon every year to raise money to
support bird habitat conservation in South or Central America.
Traditionally 3 teams have participated. But there a lot of avid birders
out there and EMAS will consider adding a 4th team this year. Maybe there
is a Haywood County group that wants in on the fun.
This is a fun day and the teams love to compete to find the most species
but the real purpose is to raise money to support conservation of winter
bird habitat - this year in Nicaragua. Team members are strongly
encouraged to reach out to their friends, family, work colleagues,
birding acquaintances for donations. It never hurts to ask! Birdathon is
an important EMAS initiative. If we want to continue to experience the
excitement of seeing and hearing our migrants return from Central and South
America, we need to help them.
If you would like to organize a Birdathon team for the 2017 event, please
contact me. You will want to recruit 2 or 3 more birders (or however many
will fit in one car).
Here are the rules. A combination of American Birding Association Big Day
Count Rules and long time EMAS rules.
1. One 24 hour period.
2. One vehicle.
3. Western North Carolina (not defined but driving time will dictate it to
some extent. You cannot drive to South Carolina beaches!)
4. Count only full species as indicated by the current ABA Checklist and

5. Birds must be wild, ALIVE and unrestrained. Eggs do not count as birds!
6. Birds must be conclusively identified by sight or sound. Use common
sense: if in doubt about the bird’s identity, don’t count it.
