Folks,
Over the last few weeks I have visited local hotspots near Asheville looking
for late fall and early winter birds. Many I saw were nice birds that I
expected and a few were surprises.
•Yellow-bellied Sapsucker- these have moved back into our area, this one seen
along the river trail at WWCollege. I like the view because the yellowish
belly is usually not obvious. 11/21/18
•White-throated Sparrow- also seen at WWC. A great place to find these is
between the hog lot and the cattle lot with the chuckwagon and chickens. There
is a trail along a ditch between these lots, along a row of white pines and
briars. I rarely see the male sparrow but females are numerous. 11/21/18
•Wood ducks, male and female- these skittish ducks were seen at Lake Logan in
Haywood Co. They would not let me get close but as they flushed I caught them
one behind the other during take off. 11/17/18
•Hermit Thrush- This was the first I'd seen this winter and they are always a
pleasant find. 11/21/18
•Lake Oceola proved to be a good location that provided my first of the season
Gadwall and Bufflehead at fairly close range. The Bufflehead was swimming
along a bit sideways. 12/6/18
•Rusty Blackbird- back at WWC this blackbird is reliable on the same path
where the White-throated Sparrows hang out. There are often several hiding in
the trees. 12/12/18
•I was surprised to find this Killdeer foraging in the snow. It was among 4 or
5 others. I believe this was the first one I've seen in white stuff. 12/12/18
Winter birding can often be rewarding but persistence is necessary.
