Folks,
Many sparrows have returned to the mountains and good looks are appearing at
locations like Warren Wilson College and Hooper Lane. Here are a few examples
seen in the attached photos. A couple of other species are included that were
associated with the sparrows.
• Savannah Sparrow, Hooper Lane, 10/18/17. There were several along the ditch
perpendicular to Hooper Ln leading into the the sod field on the right before
Jeffress Rd. These are nice to photograph because they perch sometime. I must
return to try to spot the Grasshopper Sparrow seen nearby.
• Northern Harrier, Hooper Lane, 10/18/17. This harrier was perch in the same
ditch as the Savannahs, I didn't see it until it flushed and got one decent
photo as it looked back toward me.
• White-crowned Sparrow, WWC, 10/19/17. There were several sparrows across
WWC Road from the parking area near the river, in a garden with harvested corn
stalks. The next two sparrows were seen in the same location.
• Swamp Sparrow, WWC, 10/19/17. Please check this ID, I think it's a Swamp
but doesn't look just right??
• Lincoln Sparrow, WWC, 10/19/17. This lovely sparrow is always a joy to see.
• Meadow Lark, Mills River Park, 10/18/17. While looking for sparrows in
Mills River Park, there were a few of these in the grassy field near the river.
Good birding,
Alan LenkAsheville
