As I watched the White-cheeked Pintail yesterday it swam near shore and stood
upon a rock out of the water or on one just under. For the next 10 minutes it
went into rapid preening mode with strange contortions placing its bill over
much of its body, and often raising its foot for a head scratch. The preening
was done with eyes closed most of the time, as some of the photos reveal. When
done, the duck flapped it wings to perhaps put all feathers back in their
proper place, then swam away. We don't know where this duck came from but it
seems to be enjoying its new location to the fullest, quite close to the duck
food dispenser. Smart.
