Fifteen birders met at Owen Park ahead of the impending snowstorm. It was a
chilly morning, but everyone seemed to be dressed accordingly.
Unfortunately a Bald Eagle soared over the park before most folks arrived
and didn't reappear. We did a circuit of the upper pond, but the wintering
Green Heron was not around and the only waterfowl were the Canada
Goose/Mallard gang. Several Fish Crows flew overhead calling and the normal
flock of Rock Pigeons flew backwards and forwards over the park. We
continued onto the Warren-Wilson property finding a flock of American
Pipits, several Rusty Blackbirds and a selection of wintering sparrows; a
couple of Red-shouldered Hawks were hunting over the fields and a very
obliging Golden-crowned Kinglet fed with a mixed flock allowing us to get
great views.
We finished the walk with over 40 species, but more importantly, most of us
got great views of most birds.
The next community walk will be at Lake Julian Park the last Saturday of
the month.
