Hello Birding Friends,
My apologies for the late report. Blue Ridge Audubon's first birding outing
of 2022 was on April 1 - actually January 1 - at the Beaver Lake Bird
sanctuary. It just felt like April with temps in the 60's. A group of 15
enjoyed the nice temperatures, although it was overcast. We first braved
the crossing of Merrimon Avenue to watch a female Bufflehead diving in the
pond by the golf course. Everyone enjoyed seeing a female Belted
Kingfisher, although it was a long way away. Another highlight was a Hairy
Woodpecker, working a tree close by. The count was 27 species, all
regular winter birds but a reasonable number for January. My thanks to Jay
Wherley for finding most of the birds.
