I don't have Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at my feeder consistently. They seem
to appear during spring migration, hang around my yard for a couple of weeks,
and then disappear to parts unknown. Then all of a sudden one or two will
return for a few days, then depart once more, and this pattern continues for
the rest of the season. One a recent visit I had a male repeatedly drink from
the feeder and then find a uncluttered perch near my deck to rest. The
attached photos were take near sunset, thus the rather dark background. The
ruby throat on the bird has not been enhanced in photoshop, it is the color as
it came out of the camera. The fill flash I use probably helps but the color
is there before I click the shutter. When the natural light is just right and
the bird positions itself "correctly", the miraculous color becomes a beacon
of light for a split second. The last photo is of the same bird without the
glow.
