We found some incredible birds in Henderson County today, including the Greater
White-fronted geese by the Mills River library. However, when we first got onto
Hooper Lane, my dad and I saw an immense dark bird with a long neck flying
above the trees. The neck was fully outstretched. The bird was flying with
slow, steady wingbeats that should rule out any kind of goose (in case I'm that
terrible at judging size). With that glimpse, the bird disappeared below the
trees, never to be seen again, and both of us were thinking along the lines of
Sandhill Crane. I have heard that cranes have been seen here, and was wondering
if I have made some big mistake or if anyone has seen this bird recently. If
you're out around that area, I would kindly ask you to keep your eyes peeled.
