Hello all,
We ran the Henderson County Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 20th this year. It
was a chilly to mild day with high temps around 40.
Here are the highlights of a record breaking day.
Dec. 20th 2022 Count DayTotal Species: 95 This is the highest total ever for
this count!!!!!!Previous Record was 9395 species in the mountains in the winter
is really tough to do for a single day.
22 Participants traveled 33.15 Miles by foot over 33.5 hours, and 227.5 Miles
by car over 17 hours
We had a couple species that had all time high counts:Green-winged Teal: 33
Previous 27Redhead: 7 Previous: 5Fish Crow: 6 Previous: 4Orange-crowned
Warbler: 1 Tied Previous highYellow-bellied Sapsucker 34 Previous: 31
It was a good year for the common species. We really didn't have anything
earth shattering, but we did get most of the common species around. I would
say the best birds on the count were: Orange-crowned Warbler, Ross's Goose,
Snow Goose, and American Woodcock. All have been on previous counts but really
are easy to miss.
The most numerous bird on the count was European Starling with 775
I don't think we have any birds that we just missed, a few birds that have
occurred on multiple counts previously that we didn't get are: House Wren,
Ring-billed Gull, Ruddy Duck, and Merlin. So with a little luck we may be able
to hit 100!
Happy New Year,
