I’ll just throw this out there - of the three elements of population dynamics I
feel like we by far the most data on reproduction, much less on mortality, and
intertwined with that, almost nothing on movements, since movement is the
hardest nut to crack (with recognition here that there are some interesting
data published from radio-tracked Ontario releasted birds).  Whether migratory
or “resident,” dispersal by both young birds and adults is to me, the missing
link and from a management perspective. Knowing the amount of mixing
potentially across states or regions (remember the VA shrike that visited ON?!)
is a big deal.  How much progress a cSWG could make toward that goal is
debatable but to me, understanding shrike movements is the biggest remaining
“thing” and also allows much better understanding of mortality.  Are there
places we could take advantage of existing MOTUS arrays?  Could we fund enough
MOTUS stations in the right places to get better data, in an area where shrike
populations are currently robust?  Is putting transmitters on lots of shrikes
not only costly but a bad idea for other reasons?  Those are the discussions
I’d like to have.

I would probably not be able to work on this much with such a short timeline,
but could potentially devote a little time to it.

I haven’t been involved in the latest cSWG discussions, so I am not entirely
sure what the focus is on. But from my perspective, the thing I see as being
most worthwhile at this point would be to do some experimental manipulations of
potential habitat across space (e.g., adding shrubs/perches/artificial nest
sites specific to context) to try to 1) increase shrike density/occupancy
(breeding and non-breeding) and then 2) monitor condition and demographics (age
ratio, survival, productivity) of birds in treatments vs. controls.

Subject: [eloshwg] update on cSWG

This Message Is From an External Sender
This message came from outside your organization. Please be careful.
Hi all,
I have, inadvertently, somewhat updated folks on the cSWG. As noted in the
email meant just for Scott, but which went to the group, we may not be able to
apply for cSWG this year. However, David will not know for sure until January.

Given that January is a rapid turn-around to due date of February, I'd like
feedback on 1. whether we should put this idea on hold and work to a 2024
deadline and, 2. either way, it would be very useful if folks would send me a
few bullet points of their priorities for research, surveys and monitoring -
those are the categories we would likely be focused on applying for.

My apologies for my internet issues yesterday. The notes Alisa took helped me
catch up, but I'm sorry to have missed the discussion.

Could folks please provide me with feedback to the above-noted questions by
December 22?

Thank you,
Amy
