Can anyone comment on their thoughts about or prior experience with providing
artificial nesting habitat for loggerhead shrikes? I recall a previous comment
(perhaps from Susan Craig) about coiled barbed wire placed in a tree - has
anyone tried this or known a shrike to use a set up like this?
In Indiana we have a lot of habitat that would be suitable for shrikes except
for the lack of bushes in fence rows. Many farmers around here protect their
fences by keeping them "clean" of all vegetation. Our shrikes are predictable
and particular and frequently nest in isolated bushes in fence rows. We are
considering providing artificial Christmas trees with barbed wire in select
fence rows, to see if the shrikes might respond.
Your comments are appreciated!
