Hi Katie,



Similar to Alex in AR, here in VA I see the occasional LOSH near/next to a
house, utilizing trees/shrubs and even the roof of the house, but these
houses are in rural pasture settings.



I’ll also throw in my out-of-state urban shrike observation:



8-12-2019, while vacationing in FL, observed an adult LOSH from an Avis Car
Rental parking lot, perched on a powerline behind an adjacent auto service
business – Homestead, FL,

I have two interesting observations to offer up:



Palanios, TX; 3/14/16: watched a pair on a ~100' strip of green park space
between a dense residential area and the water. Female was busily building
a nest in a palm tree. Pair was hunting from power lines along yards and
the road.



Brunswick, GA; 4/16/22: while pumping gas along a 4-lane highway just off
I-95, I noticed a shrike on a power line. I watched until it flew to an
ornamental shrub at the edge of the gas station parking lot, I took a
closer look and located a nest with 4 young, near fledging. This area is
very built up with high traffic, with the only usable green space being a
strip between the access road that the gas station was on and the 4-lane
(Rt. 17).



I'd be happy to share coordinates for either on request...

For those who don't know me, I'm Chris Hill's current master's student. My
thesis focuses on LOSH and their interaction with urban habitats. It's been
a few years since someone from the Hill lab did a quick survey about
Loggerhead Shrikes living in predominantly urban/developed
areas. Currently, urban-dwelling LOSH have been documented in Arizona,
Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas.



I'd love to hear from you if you have any observations of LOSH in urban
areas so I can update our running list. Please feel free to reach out to me
directly with any and all observations/anecdotes!
