The illustrations that Chris sent from Miller's book are old but still very
pertinent. Illustrations C and E
more closely match the SY spring birds that I've caught in the central
flyway. In some cases, NO SS
were replaced. I attribute this to diet. Having spent several winters in
Texas catching shrikes, I've
observed that the foraging opportunities can be rather poor. On the east
coast where you folks work,
winters are much friendlier for shrikes (I spent 2 winters in Florida too).
Lived there for 10 years catching
hawks and shrikes. As I encountered emaciated hawks and skinny shrikes, I
became more attuned to
habitat conditions. One spring here in Colorado, a friend who lives out on
the plains called to say a hawk
had crashed in his front yard. I went out to see what it was - a SY
red-tailed hawk that had just run out of
steam. I picked it up and we put it in an old shed. I fed it a mouse and we
let it rest, but it still couldn't fly. My
friend went out and shot a rabbit for the hawk, which ate almost all of the
rabbit. The next day I collected up
the hawk again and took it to a rehabber. After a couple of months in rehab
with some decent food,
it was released near the spot where it had crashed.
