i can accept that only if i understand the rational that allows a heavily
beated corps move much much much more kms to reach civilized world rather than
hide in closest swamps
i will go step by step
7.5.2.10.3.1: All retreats must be into an adjacent land area that is closest
(any closest area, if several qualify equally) to the nearest depot of any
nationality in the losing forceforce, or if none is on the map, towards that
force's nearest controlled national capital city.
where/how is closest defined? in terms of movement, km, areas?
if there is anywhere a hint that connects it with mps then end of story. but i
do understand closest as distance. (i dare to say that most people understand
it the same way, ie. Corinth is MUCH closer to Athens than Salonica, do we need
clarification for that closest? please tell me no).
in our case it is clear that this adjacent and closest to Riga area is Erblag
then
7.5.2.10.3.3: If the area retreated to contains an unbesieged enemy corps,
cossack, freikorps or depot garrison, the force is retreated one more area
(same rules as 7.5.2.10.3.1), etc., until an open area is reached.
one more adjacent area to where the corps is now, and open is the one with the
marsh.
still stays to be defined the closest meaning.

I think the tsar is right. Reading the rules I understand that the first
condition is to move in the area closest to the depot. The second condition is
this area to be free. Not the other way round.
And the rule says it may be repeated until a free area is found. So it seems
Russians use German rail...

we agree that the 1st choice is Erblag
according to 7.5.2.10.3.3 it has to be retreated one more area towards Riga.
the only one available is the one with the marshes

counting either mps or areas the route I pointed out is the shortest
from Erblag through the marshes distance is 5 areas/6 mps
from Erblag through Konigsberg distance is 4/4mps or 5mps if the French XXX
adds another one

regarding withdrawal, according to the rules, is not mentioned anywhere a

7.5.2.10.3 Retreat After Losing A Combat: The loser is retreated one area
by the victor. This occurs after pursuit (if any).

7.5.2.10.3.6: A force must surrender (A army factors and leaders in the
force become prisoners) if no retreat route is available.
to comment on the yellow, the adjacent to Danzig and nearest to Riga area is
the one south of Kinigsberg where is occupied by a prussian corps. so according
to the yellow lines it has to be retreaded one more are to the direction of
Riga, such is the marsh

coalition had
Pru V and VII, Au V and Han
total 23 factors
1st rd was 6+1 at 1-3 = 10% i.e. 2 Ru factors lost
2nd rd was 2+1 at 2-3 = 5% another 1 factor lost
pursuit roll was 1 with 4 cav = 0
so 5 out of 8 Ru factors remain
retreat must be towards closest friendly depot that is Riga
so 1st area retreated is Elblag then Konigsberg (as distance to Riga is only 3
areas while distance from Olsztyn is 4) then Klapeda then Jurmala
and coalition shall lose 2 Pru factors
