on "Geology at different education levels in Europe" organized by EFG
and the Hungarian Geological Society, Budapest, Hungary, 19 May 2011.*
The annual meeting of the European Federation of Geologists will be held
in May 2011 at Budapest and is accompanied by a workshop on the subject
of education in the area of geology. Both oral and poster presentations
concerning any educational level are expected. The main achievements of
the Euro-Ages project (www.euro-ages.eu <http://www.euro-ages.eu/>) will
also be presented during the workshop. Furthermore, a fieldtrip to the
Balaton Lake and the Bakony-Balaton Geopark will be proposed on 20 May.
The area of the catastrophic red sludge spill will also be visited. For

*EFG participated as partner in the first PanGeo Kick-Off Meeting, 1-2
March 2011.*
The objective of PanGeo is to enable free and open access to geo-hazard
information in support of GMES. This will be achieved by the generation
of a validated Geohazard Data Layer supported by a Geohazard Summary for
52 of the largest towns listed in the GMES Land Theme's Urban Atlas
involving all 27 countries of the EU. More information related to this

geothermal energy systems in old, unused mines. The technology is proven

During the last years the EFG Panel of Experts on Natural Hazards

was implicated in the public consultation on disaster risk reduction in
developing countries initiated by the European Commission’s DG
Development. This consultation aimed at gathering views and opinions on
DDR in the context of development cooperation, with the view of
developing an EU Strategy. In February 2011 the "Implementation Plan of
the EU Strategy for supporting disaster risk reduction in developing
countries 2011 - 2014" has been adopted and duly transmitted to the Council.
*European Environment Agency (2010) Mapping the impacts of natural
hazards and technological accidents in Europe - An overview of the last
decade.*
A new report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA)
concludes that the number and impacts of disasters have increased in
Europe during the last decade. The report assesses the frequency of
disasters and their impacts on humans, the economy and ecosystems and
calls for better integrated risk management across Europe.

Job Description:* A series of 12 Ph.D positions, financed by the
European Community, are available within the European Marie Curie
Initial Training Network "CHANGES". The CHANGES network will develop an
advanced understanding of how global changes (related to environmental
and climate change as well as socio-economical change) will affect the
temporal and spatial patterns of hydro-meteorological hazards and
associated risks in Europe; how these changes can be assessed, modelled,
and incorporated in sustainable risk management strategies, focusing on
spatial planning, emergency preparedness and risk communication.

**Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Geological CO_2 Storage Geochemistry* *
*Location:* University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada)
*Job Description:* The Applied Geochemistry Group in the Department of
Geoscience at the University of Calgary proposes a postdoctoral fellow
(PDF) position to conduct innovative research on geochemical aspects
related to secure CO_2 storage in geological formations. The research
will involve field based geochemical tracing of injected CO_2 coupled
with laboratory experiments investigating chemical and isotopic patterns
resulting from brine-rock-CO_2 interactions. In addition it is planned
to input the obtained geochemical and geophysical information from
selected field pilots into reservoir models to advance our ability to
describe the extent and the phase distribution of injected CO_2 in the
target reservoirs.

*Qualifications:* Candidates should have experience in aqueous
geochemistry pertaining to water-rock interactions. Experience in
isotope geochemistry and/or with geochemical or reservoir models is an
asset. The ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment and
fluency in English are essential. At the time of appointment, candidates
must have completed all requirements for their PhD within the past 3
years preferably in geology, chemistry, geochemistry or a related field.
*Contract conditions:* Initially one-year term appointment with
possibility of renewal for another 1,5 years. Remuneration will vary
between $44,000 and $50,000 Canadian dollars per annum dependent on
experience.
