(1) EA Technical Volunteers: The EngineeringDirectorate/EA (Amy Ross, EA
Executive Intern) is requesting that EA Alumni whoare interested in sharing
their experiences and expertise as well as beinginvolved in current technical
efforts of the directorate, complete the enclosed application form. It is

(2) Norm Schulze Request forEngineering Stories: The purpose of this request is
to solicit your help in developing the SpaceTask Group/Manned Spacecraft
Center/Johnson Space Center engineeringstory. Specifically, what do you see as
our contributions that madethings go right or has saved the crew if things went
wrong? What did wecontribute to the US Space Program? Can we relate any high
adventure orespecially exciting moments as in testing or design? I seek the
excitingand the mundane.
The story needs yourthoughts/suggestions/ideas, consisting of any type or any
number ofsuggestions, so that we accurately and thoroughly reveal JSC
engineeringcontributions over the years up to the present. Are there
lessonslearned? Can we develop a story that would serve as an
inspirationalsource for a budding engineer?
From your feedback, I will develop ashopping list of candidate contributions.
I have heard several unheard ofstories as I broached the subject during
convenient occasions like the lastreunion.
Background:– During our reunions wehave lamented, heard, and have made comments
on the absence of E&Drecognition with regard to our contributions to the US
Space Program. Theflight crew, like in The Right Stuff and Apollo 13, have
gottengreat publicity, as they should, plus FOD has been recently recognized in
anational documentary, Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo. Pre-flight
and post flight briefings as well as events during missions areoften covered
during real-time newscasts. But we were typicallyexcluded.
Bottom line: E&D has always beenignored pretty much. Let’s change that! This
list does not have to be constrained to events taking place in thevery early
days but should lead up to today.
Having developed an interest inpreserving family history, including what we did
at JSC in the spaceexploration programs and being sympathetic with the
realization that we are notgiven proper recognition as to our contributions, I
took it upon myself by thetime of the 2012 reunion to do something positive to
change the situation. I filmed both Bernie and Ken Cox at that time as a start.
Afterwards, I neglected that undertaking due to personal commitments; but
withKen’s recent death, I became re-motivated, determined, and dedicated to
thepursuit of developing the E&D, or simply, engineering, story.
The story will be as good as youmake it, for without your help, it will be
inadequate. Please submit anyideas to Norm Schulze, nrschulze@xxxxxxxxx. This
letter will go out toall on the E&D list plus engineering staff. Perhaps you
may know ofsomeone missed. Please feel free to confer with others.
